UniverCell and the EIC Accelerator: Battery Cells Made in Germany

UniverCell, founded in 2019 by Stefan Permien and Marius Strack and based in Flintbek near Kiel, has made battery electrodes since November 2020 and is now building its own 21700 cylindrical lithium-ion cells for satellites, critical-care medical devices and other demanding uses. Its EIC Accelerator project, "Customized 21700 cylindrical cells for special applications", received an EU contribution of €2,387,000 towards a total cost of €3,410,285 and runs from July 2024 to October 2026, according to CORDIS. The award was blended finance, a grant plus equity.

In March 2026 UniverCell closed a €30 million Series B co-led by the DeepTech & Climate Fonds (DTCF), the process technology maker IKA and the instrument maker WIKA, with the EIC Fund participating, according to DTCF. The money is to build out what the company calls a gigafactory to more than 40 million cells a year. The company reported more than 82 employees and a first multi-million-euro commercial contract with a US customer. It had 83 employees and a double-digit million revenue in 2025, and planned to produce 50,000 of its own cells a month from June 2026, according to Trending Topics. Whether that cell production started on time has not been reported.

Where UniverCell Stands Now

In 2026 UniverCell marked its 1,000th customer order for electrodes, according to UniverCell. It is working with Litona on a sodium-ion battery in the German government-funded SIB-DE project, and it registered its share capital at €403,528 in February 2026, according to North Data. It is hiring machine operators for slurry production and coating.

The Technology: Dry-Coated Electrodes and Tabless Cells

UniverCell makes all its anodes and cathodes in-house. Its key process is dry coating, which applies electrode material without the solvents and drying ovens of conventional wet coating; the company says this cuts energy use, chemicals and CO2 emissions. Its 21700 cell has a tabless design and an aluminium housing, according to UniverCell. It is developing dry coating with its investor IKA, from piloting to large-scale series production.

What the EIC Award Promised, and What the Record Shows

The EIC project was to produce customised 21700 cells for special applications. It runs until October 2026, so it is too early to judge it. The record shows the cell platform, a US contract and a production plan, but no public confirmation that series cell production has begun.

The Money

UniverCell made small profits from 2021 to 2023, then lost €851,981 in 2024. At the end of 2024 it had equity of €860,770 against liabilities of €10.6 million and cash of €525,640, according to its accounts published via North Data. Public money has been a steady source of funding: German and EU bodies awarded it €10.2 million from 2021 to 2026, including the EIC grant.

DTCF's venture partner said Europe's battery sector is under pressure from Chinese joint ventures. UniverCell's route is small volumes of specialised cells for customers who value a European supply. Whether it can reach tens of millions of cells a year is the next test.
