TargTex, based in Torres Vedras, Portugal, and led by chief executive João Seixas, has developed NANO-PL, also called TTX101, a hydrogel loaded with nanosized piperlongumine, a small molecule it identified with machine learning, which a surgeon would apply inside the brain cavity after removing a glioblastoma to attack the tumour cells left behind. Glioblastoma is the deadliest adult brain tumour, with a five-year survival of 6.8%. TargTex was selected in the EIC Accelerator's June 2023 cut-off with blended finance and received an EU grant of €2.50 million for nPL4GBM, a €3.80 million project from November 2024 to October 2026 whose objectives include "preparation of the Phase 1/2a clinical trial and initiation of the study", according to CORDIS.

The first report, to November 2025, says TargTex transferred manufacturing "from lab scale to Kg scale", about ten times the optimised process, ran a feasibility study with clinical batches, nearly completed sterilisation validation, redesigned the product from a two-vial system mixed in theatre into a more robust configuration, and reclassified it as a drug-device combination, according to the CORDIS reporting page. It says "several leading clinical sites have already been secured" and that the trial "is, nonetheless, a demanding enterprise" requiring financial support. In May 2026 TargTex hired EdgeOne Medical to assess its "dual-syringe hydrogel delivery platform" against FDA combination product requirements, according to TargTex. No trial of NANO-PL appears on ClinicalTrials.gov or the EU trials register.

Where TargTex Stands Now

The US Food and Drug Administration granted TTX101 orphan drug designation for malignant gliomas in September 2023, according to TargTex. The Finnish company Nanoform developed its nanosized formulation, and TargTex plans its first trial in patients with recurrent glioblastoma in the United States and Europe, according to Nanoform. The company has announced no funding round since a €2 million seed extension from the pharmaceutical company Basi in February 2022, and its accounts were not reviewed for this article.

"The implementation of the clinical trial is, nonetheless, a demanding enterprise and financial support will play a key role."

The Technology: Treating the Gap After Surgery

Surgeons cannot remove all of a glioblastoma without damaging healthy brain, and most tumours return within one or two centimetres of the original site. There is also a gap of weeks between surgery and the start of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. NANO-PL is applied locally, bypassing the blood-brain barrier, and is designed to diffuse into surrounding tissue. In rats, a single dose led to 40% long-term survival with complete tumour eradication, the project summary says. The existing implant for this use, Gliadel, diffuses poorly, according to the report.

What the EIC Award Promises, and What the Record Shows

The project aims to finish manufacturing and regulatory work and start a Phase 1/2a trial by October 2026. The manufacturing milestones are largely met. But the product has been redesigned and reclassified, an external regulatory assessment only began in May 2026, and no trial has been registered with a month to go. On the public record, the trial will start after the EIC project ends, if the money is found.

The Money

The EU grant covers 66% of the project. Whether the EIC Fund invested under the blended award has not been announced; TargTex's report stresses that the trial needs further financial support.

What Cannot Be Checked

Questions for the EIC

Whether a trial application has been filed with regulators, whether the EIC Fund invested, how the trial will be funded and whether the project will be extended are not public.

Why Europe Should Care

Glioblastoma has only a few approved therapies, and none is a cure, the project summary says. A local therapy that attacks the cells surgeons cannot reach could change that. TargTex has the formulation and the manufacturing; the EIC's money has not yet reached a patient.

What the award promises

Clinical-grade manufacturing and the start of a Phase 1/2a trial by October 2026.

What the record shows

Scaled manufacturing and a redesigned product, with no trial registered yet.

The Verdict

Ready for a trial it cannot yet run

TargTex has done the manufacturing work the EIC funded. The trial that was the project's goal has not begun.
