Sea4Us, founded in 2013 as a spin-off of NOVA University Lisbon and based in Sagres, combines marine biology and electrophysiology to find drug candidates that act on ion channels; its lead, S072, is a small molecule inspired by a marine compound that it says calms overactive peripheral nerves without affecting the brain, avoiding the addiction and sedation of opioids. It was selected in the EIC Accelerator's June 2023 cut-off with blended finance and received an EU grant of €2.50 million for Sea4Market, a €3.57 million project from March 2024 to August 2026 to "clinically validate Sea4Pain through first-in-human trials and subsequently license the technology", according to CORDIS.
The first report, to February 2025, says Sea4Us established industrial-scale GMP production of its compound "without loss of analgesic efficacy and with no toxic effects" and began regulatory toxicology studies, with trials "scheduled to start Period 2", according to the CORDIS reporting page. The EU trial register shows a study of single and multiple doses of S072 in 64 healthy adults at four sites in Spain, authorised on 16 April 2026, according to the EU Clinical Trials Information System. The single ascending dose stage was completed on 24 July 2026 "with no safety concerns and no adverse events registered", according to Portugal Startup News, a month before the EIC project ended.

Where Sea4Us Stands Now
In August 2026 Sea4Us received an investment of undisclosed size from Insight Venture, which took a seat on its board, according to Portugal Startup News. In 2025 it ran a record campaign on the impact investment platform Goparity, according to its news page, and its partnering page says it remains "open for investment" in its analgesic programme. The company says its clinical strategy starts with post-surgical pain before moving to chronic pain, according to Sea4Us. The multiple-dose stage of the trial has not reported results.

Chronic pain affects about 1.6 billion people, the report says, and the strongest drugs, opioids, cause addiction. S072 targets ion channels on peripheral neurons that fire excessively in chronic pain, and is designed to be taken by mouth up to twice a day. Sea4Us says preclinical tests showed efficacy superior to standard care and no central nervous system side effects. These are animal results; the current trial only tests safety in healthy volunteers.

The award aimed to complete first-in-human trials and license the drug. Sea4Us scaled production, finished toxicology, won trial approval and completed the single-dose stage with a clean safety record, but only in the project's final months. The multiple-dose stage continues after the project ended, and no licensing deal has been announced.
