Idoven, founded in Madrid in 2018 by the cardiologist Manuel Marina Breysse, takes its name from Willem Einthoven, who invented the electrocardiogram. Its AI platform, also called Willem, reads ECG recordings from any device and flags arrhythmias, work the company says takes European physicians "over 1 million hours" a day.

The European Innovation Council granted €2,500,000 towards a €3.60 million project that ran from November 2022 to April 2025; Idoven reported €6.5 million in total EIC support, which it later described as grant and equity. According to the CORDIS report, Willem is CE-marked as a Class IIa medical device and was validated on 22,482 patients. Spanish register data compiled by Empresia put Idoven's sales between €500,000 and €1 million a year.

Where Idoven Stands Today

Idoven's news page lists TIME's World's Top HealthTech Companies in 2025 and 2026, a place among Spanish AI startups working with NVIDIA in August 2026, and a July 2026 report on Willem detecting TTR amyloidosis from a single ECG. That work comes from CONCERTO, a project with AstraZeneca launched in 2025 and in external validation in Spain, France and Italy. No funding round has been announced since 2022. The register shows the last capital increase in October 2023 and a change of board chair in June 2025.

The Technology: An AI Cardiologist for Any ECG

CORDIS reports that Willem can "detect 22 arrhythmias with over 90% accuracy", works with any hardware, and that a seven-day ECG analysed without human supervision would cost about €10. In a study published in Heart Rhythm in 2025, Willem detected atrial fibrillation in 8,528 single-lead recordings with 96.4% accuracy, 84.2% sensitivity and 97.6% specificity.

"Willem achieved an overall accuracy of 96.4%, with a sensitivity of 84.2% and a specificity of 97.6%."

What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows

The project promised "AI to reduce cardiovascular diseases". CORDIS reports a CE mark as a Class IIa device, a validation with 22,482 patients in Spain and the Netherlands against a target of 5,342, and work "paving the way for FDA clearance". No FDA clearance has been announced.

What Has Happened Since the Award

The Money

In June 2022 Idoven announced $19.8 million: a $12.9 million Series A led by Insight Partners and Northzone, with Wayra and angels including the former footballer Iker Casillas, plus $6.9 million in EIC grant and equity. CORDIS records €2.5 million as grant; subtracting that from the €6.5 million EIC total leaves about €4 million of equity, a figure the company has not stated itself.

What cannot be checked

How many hospitals or clinics pay for Willem, the status of the FDA submission and the EIC Fund's exact stake are not public.

Why Europe Should Care

The EU both granted and invested in Idoven, and the company delivered the certified, validated product the project promised. Four years after its Series A, its revenue in the register is still under €1 million a year.

What the project promised

AI to reduce cardiovascular disease, validated and certified.

What the record shows

CE mark, 22,482 patients, a published study, and sales of €0.5 to €1 million a year.

The Verdict

Proven product, small business

WILLEM overdelivered on validation and got its CE mark. Idoven has the recognition and partners, but its register sales show it has not yet turned them into a large business.
