The draft EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2027 call allocates EUR 82 million across three research portfolios: advanced materials for electricity systems, continual-learning AI agents and quantum energetics. Projects normally begin around TRL 2 and aim to establish proof of concept or laboratory validation at TRL 3–4.

Common Funding and Eligibility Rules

  • Indicative project contribution: up to EUR 4 million, with larger requests possible when justified.
  • Funding rate: 100% of eligible costs through a lump sum.
  • Eligible structures: one legal entity, two independent entities from two eligible countries, or a larger consortium satisfying the standard three-country rule.
  • A single applicant cannot be a mid-cap or large company.
  • Part B limit: 30 pages across Excellence, Impact and Implementation.

Challenge 1: Advanced Materials for Electricity Generation, Storage and Transmission

This portfolio seeks advanced materials and devices that create a measurable step change in electricity generation, storage or transmission. Projects must move beyond materials discovery and explain how the proposed advance integrates into a practical grid device or system.

  • Generation: higher efficiency, durability and cost effectiveness with reduced dependence on critical raw materials.
  • Storage: improved energy density, cycle life, safety and sustainability for renewable-heavy grids.
  • Transmission: lower losses, greater capacity and more resilient grid infrastructure.

The intended portfolio balances the three pillars and rewards cross-pillar synergies. Applicants need system boundaries, measurable baselines and a credible grid-integration roadmap.

Challenge 2: Continual Learning in Open Worlds for Reliable AI Agents

The CLOWAI challenge addresses AI agents that must adapt safely after deployment as data, tasks, users, software services and physical environments change. It targets controlled model adaptation rather than simple retrieval from an external memory.

Relevant capabilities include novelty and distribution-shift detection, calibrated uncertainty, prevention of catastrophic forgetting, provenance-aware memory, safe exploration, rollback, poisoning resistance and graceful recovery. Projects should deliver an auditable TRL 4 demonstrator tested over long horizons and under meaningful drift or novelty.

Challenge 3: Quantum Energetics

Quantum Energetics studies the full-system energy cost of generating and using quantum coherence. The scope includes processors, cooling, control and readout electronics, error correction, classical co-processing, lasers and supporting infrastructure.

Projects can address computing, communication or sensing through energy-aware algorithms, full-stack metrics, secure-bit measures, sensing sensitivity per watt and experimentally grounded demonstrations of energetic advantage. A component-level saving is insufficient when the complete system consumes more energy.

How Portfolio Evaluation Changes Proposal Strategy

Proposals first need to exceed the individual quality thresholds. The evaluation committee then selects a balanced portfolio by technical approach, application, risk, building block and TRL. A strong proposal can remain unfunded if it duplicates a stronger portfolio element, so applicants must show both standalone excellence and a distinct contribution to the Challenge roadmap.

What Applicants Should Prepare

  • A falsifiable scientific hypothesis and experimental validation plan.
  • A quantified comparison against the strongest relevant baseline.
  • A clear explanation of why the approach belongs in the selected Challenge portfolio.
  • An interdisciplinary team covering every decisive research and validation task.
  • An early plan for IP, standards, regulation and future exploitation.
