Easyl wants to make rechargeable zinc batteries last longer by stopping zinc from moving around inside them. Founded in Savoie in 2017, it makes calcium zincate, a powder that, in the words of its CORDIS report, fixes "the zinc atoms in a solid crystal that is non-soluble in the electrolyte". It produces it by milling with water instead of chemical solvents.

The European Innovation Council granted €2,495,281 to its subsidiary Easyl Zinc for SUPERZINC, a €3.56 million project that ran through 2023 and 2024. The report describes a pilot production line planned for 150 to 200 kg a day and batteries reaching "1000 charge/discharge cycles while retaining 70% of the cell's capacity". The French register shows Easyl Zinc's revenue at €440 in 2024 and €4,150 in 2025, with a net loss of €2.54 million in 2025 and equity below half its share capital.

Where Easyl Stands Today

The company's website lists its milestones as a first calcium zincate patent in 2017, the innovation centre in 2022 and the pilot production line in 2024 under SUPERZINC, and describes 240 battery-testing channels. It names no customer. The register records capital changes in 2024 and May 2025, no insolvency proceedings, and an alert that equity was below half of share capital at the end of 2025.

The Technology: Locking Zinc in a Crystal

According to the report, calcium zincate would make up "80-90% of the overall future production volume", made by a patented bead-milling process. Dry powders proved stable when sealed from air, and, unlike lime, the material does not react with carbon dioxide, which the report says avoids quality problems in battery electrodes. Easyl has partnerships for cross-testing with zinc battery makers, according to a 2022 report in Best Magazine, which did not name them.

What the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows

SUPERZINC promised "sustainable powder materials for zinc rechargeable batteries" produced at pilot scale. The report shows the pilot line under construction at the end of 2023, due to start in mid-2024, and battery tests reaching 1,000 cycles. It gives no output actually produced, no customer and no sales.

What Has Happened Since the Award

The Money

Easyl Zinc's net loss grew from €0.43 million in 2023 to €1.49 million in 2024 and €2.54 million in 2025, while it employed 11 people. No external funding round has been announced; the parent company Easyl has been its controlling shareholder since its creation.

What cannot be checked

How much calcium zincate the pilot line has produced, who has tested or bought it, and how the company will finance itself with equity below half its capital are not public.

Why Europe Should Care

The EIC paid most of the cost of a European pilot line for zinc battery materials. The line exists; the market for its product, on the evidence of the company's own accounts, does not yet.

What the project promised

Sustainable powder materials for rechargeable zinc batteries, produced at pilot scale.

What the record shows

A pilot line, 1,000-cycle tests, €4,150 of revenue in 2025 and a €2.54M loss.

The Verdict

Built to produce, not yet selling

SUPERZINC gave Easyl a pilot line and test data. Almost two years after it ended, the company has recorded only a few thousand euros of sales and its losses have grown to the point where its equity is below half its capital.
