Aligned Bio, founded in Lund in 2019 on research from Lund University and Chalmers University of Technology, makes nanowires that act as optical waveguides. They collect the light emitted by single molecules and direct it into standard instrument optics, making very faint signals visible. The EIC worklist records the company as AlignD Systems AB; CORDIS lists the same project under AlignedBio AB.
The European Innovation Council granted €2,315,944 towards a €3.31 million project, NanoWi, that ran from June 2022 to September 2024 to build nanowire sensors for disease biomarkers, "approximately 20 times more sensitive" than existing tests. The CORDIS report says the company's nanowire production tool, ATXY, "will not deliver within project time". In July 2026 Aligned Bio raised $3.6 million to move into DNA sequencing and protein detection.

Where Aligned Bio Stands Today
In May 2026 Aligned Bio said it had shown that a commercially available benchtop sequencer, fitted with its nanowire sensor, can image single DNA molecules without amplifying them first, which it says could allow reads "of up to at least 3,000 bases". The July 2026 round of $3.6 million (SEK 35 million), led by the Swedish family office LMK, is "the largest capital raise in the company's history". A new CEO, Pete Corish, joined in June. The company says it will look to partner with sequencing and proteomics companies "over the next six to twelve months" and must still scale up manufacturing of its nanowire consumables.
The Technology: Wires That Guide Light
According to CORDIS, the company combined three proprietary technologies to make nanowires of controlled size at low cost. The project assembled a beta version of the ATXY production tool and, "for the first time ever", grew gallium phosphide nanowires with it, "although not currently to target specifications". It also switched to silicon nanowires "without loss of functionality" and produced at least 90% aligned nanowires over a square millimetre.
"ATXY will not deliver within project time."
NanoWi report, CORDISWhat the EIC Project Promised, and What CORDIS Shows
The project promised nanowire sensors for early disease detection, such as cancer, taken towards technology readiness level 9, a finished product. CORDIS reports progress on production and a switch of material, but also that the production tool was significantly delayed. No product for biomarker testing has been launched.

What Has Happened Since the Award
The Money
The award was blended finance; the July 2026 release lists Almi Invest, LU Ventures, STOAF and LMK as investors and does not mention the EIC Fund. Aligned Bio's revenue and losses are not in the sources we used.
What cannot be checked
Whether the EIC Fund invested, whether the ATXY tool now meets specification, and independent data on the claimed sensitivity and read lengths are not public.
Why Europe Should Care
The EIC paid for a diagnostic sensor; the company that took the money is now building a component for DNA sequencers. The underlying nanowire technology is the same, but on the public record the grant has not produced the medical diagnostic it described.
What the project promised
Nanowire sensors 20 times more sensitive for early disease detection, at TRL 9.
What the record shows
A delayed production tool, no diagnostic launched, and a new focus on DNA sequencing.
The Verdict
A new market, the same tool
NanoWi advanced the nanowires but not the diagnostic it promised. Aligned Bio now bets on sequencing, with fresh money and no announced partner yet.
