Mitiga Solutions Is Back at the EIC Accelerator, Now for Grids

October 14, 20262,335 words12 min

When Iceland's Eyjafjallajökull erupted in April 2010, its ash closed much of Europe's airspace for seven days, cancelled more than 100,000 flights and cost the industry between €1.5 billion and €2.5 billion, according to a CORDIS results article. Mitiga Solutions, a 2018 spin-off of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC), set out to sell airlines the forecasts that were missing that week. In 2019 the EU gave it €1,212,563 to do so.

Seven years later, aviation has almost disappeared from Mitiga's website. The company now sells EarthScan, a platform that estimates how floods, heat, wildfire and drought will hit buildings, infrastructure and investment portfolios, and in October 2025 it won a second EIC award, this time to bring that analysis to solar farms, wind parks and power grids. Mitiga itself calls the move "the strategic pivot we initiated in 2024", in its February 2026 announcement of the award.

What Mitiga Sells in 2026

Mitiga is active and growing. Its website sells EarthScan, which it describes as delivering "science-based climate intelligence that helps organisations assess, report and act on physical climate risks", with climate projections from 1970 to 2100 for more than 180 countries. In June 2026 Mitiga won the main startup competition at South Summit Madrid, according to Emprendedores and the company. In July 2026 Multiverse Computing, the Basque AI and quantum software company, agreed to license EarthScan in what both sides call a multi-million-euro deal, and to act as Mitiga's technology adviser, according to Mitiga and Quantum Zeitgeist. The exact value has not been published.

Much of EarthScan did not start at Mitiga. On 25 June 2023 the company bought the intellectual property and intangible assets of Cervest, a London climate intelligence company, according to Mitiga's announcement. Dealroom records that Cervest, whose flagship product was also called EarthScan and which had raised a $30 million Series A in 2021, was declared insolvent in mid-2023. The price was not disclosed.

The Technology: Supercomputer Models Turned Into Risk Scores

Mitiga's core skill has stayed the same while its market changed: running physical models of the atmosphere on supercomputers and turning the output into a number a business can act on. For ICE4ATM, the impact engine combined external dispersion models of ash and dust with flight plans, aircraft data and weather forecasts, the CORDIS report says, so that an airline could decide to delay, reroute or cancel a flight before take-off. In 2018, before the grant, the CEO told Catalan News that airlines had "no tool" for this and usually cancelled flights to avoid risk.

SOLARA uses what Mitiga calls its Multiple Futures Model: global climate models, reanalysis data and ground observations are combined into probabilistic hazard projections to 2100, downscaled to about 1 km and fed into physics-based impact models that estimate production losses, weather-driven ageing and damage at individual sites, according to CORDIS. The company claims 92% accuracy across 10 sites in a pilot with an unnamed renewable energy company. That figure comes from Mitiga and has not been independently published.

"ICE4ATM and its early adopter programme highlighted the need for VIEWS services on the ground, for airports, complementary to those for aircraft in flight."

Mauricio Hanzich, CTO, Mitiga Solutions, to CORDIS

ICE4ATM: What the 2019 Grant Promised and What CORDIS Shows

The European Commission's list of EIC SME Instrument Phase 2 winners for the 3 April 2019 cut-off names Mitiga Solutions of Barcelona for ICE4ATM, the Atmospheric Impact Calculator Engine for Air Traffic Management, with no partner company listed. The grant agreement was signed on 30 October 2019. The project ran from 1 November 2019 to 31 October 2021, with a total cost of €1,739,375, of which the EU paid €1,212,563, according to CORDIS.

The stated objective was to raise the system from technology readiness level 6 to 9, that is from a prototype demonstrated in a relevant environment to a system proven in operation. The final periodic report says TRL 9 was reached and "ended up in contracts with the industry", that the project "finalized on track" despite COVID-19, and that Mitiga already sold two services: MITIGA-VIEWS, a 24/7 volcanic impact early warning system for airlines, and MITIGA-EDOSE, a contaminant dose calculator for engine makers. It also admits a gap: satellite-based event detection was "not good enough for operationalization". The results page lists four reports, project videos and one 2020 technical paper co-written with staff of NASA, Rolls-Royce and the flight planning firm Flightkeys.

  1. Raise ICE4ATM from TRL 6 to 9DeliveredReported in the CORDIS final report; VIEWS sold as a 24/7 service.
  2. Operational software layer and cloud serviceDeliveredCORDIS reports over 99.9% availability after the move to the cloud.
  3. Paying aviation customersPartlyBSC listed EUROCONTROL, Safran and INDRA among clients in 2023, without naming the services; no contract values public.
  4. Satellite-based event detectionNot achieved"Not good enough for operationalization", per the final report.
  5. Volcanic warning service still on saleNot foundMitiga's 2026 website offers only an engine aerosol exposure model for aviation.

The strongest claim is unconfirmed. Hanzich told CORDIS that VIEWS had been "selected as the replacement for a tool created by Eurocontrol" after Eyjafjallajökull, so that Mitiga would supply "the new early warning system for the entire European sky". In December 2025 EUROCONTROL announced an upgraded version of its own crisis tool, EVITA, which now takes quantitative ash concentration data from the volcanic ash advisory centres in London and Toulouse. The announcement names no outside supplier, and whether Mitiga's software is part of it could not be verified. The BSC did list EUROCONTROL among Mitiga's clients in May 2023.

What ICE4ATM promised

The first operational system to forecast and mitigate volcanic ash impacts for airlines, airports and engine makers in real time, for a serviceable market Mitiga put at €15M over five years.

What the record shows

The software was built and sold, but satellite detection fell short, aviation revenue was never disclosed, and by 2024 the company had moved its focus to climate risk for investors and energy operators.

The Money

Private investors arrived after the aviation grant, and backed the climate risk business rather than aviation. In May 2023 Mitiga raised a €13.25 million Series A led by Kibo Ventures with the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund, Nationwide Ventures, Faber Ventures and CREAS Impacto, according to the BSC and Capital-Riesgo.es. In February 2024 Telefónica invested through Telefónica Ventures and Íope Ventures, without stating an amount, according to Telefónica. In June 2024 Elaia led an €8 million extension, according to Emprendedores; the UPC used that round to sell its 1.43% stake and said the company had raised €21 million since its founding, according to Capital-Riesgo.es.

One €21M figure, reported two ways

In June 2026 Ecosistema Startup reported that Mitiga "closed a round of 21 million euros" with Kibo Ventures and the Microsoft Climate Innovation Fund. No other source reports a new round in 2026, and the 2023 round and 2024 extension add up to €21.25 million, the total the UPC gave in 2024. A separate €21 million round in 2026 could not be verified.

Revenue is modest next to that capital. The 2023 accounts of the Spanish company show revenue of €423,000, up 36.3%, a loss of €1.81 million and equity of €13.97 million after the Series A, according to Infoempresa. Empresia likewise puts annual turnover below €500,000, and lists filed accounts up to 2024, whose figures are not freely available. Whether revenue is also booked in other group companies is not public. Staff figures disagree: the BSC counted 30 people in Spain and the UK in May 2023, Infoempresa shows 24 employees, and ACCIÓ, the Catalan government's business agency, gave 65 in February 2026, according to Capital-Riesgo.es.

SOLARA and Six Other EU Projects

The EIC's list of companies selected at the 1 October 2025 EIC Accelerator cut-off, published with the results on 17 February 2026, names Mitiga Solutions SL for SOLARA with blended finance. CORDIS gives an EU contribution of €2,413,189 and a running time from 1 June 2026 to 31 May 2028; the goal is to take the platform from TRL 5 to TRL 8 and extend it from renewable plants to substations, distribution networks and transmission lines. Mitiga said it would also receive up to €6 million in equity. Mitiga was not on the EIC Fund's list of invested companies when all 16 pages were checked for this article in October 2026, so whether and when that equity is paid is not yet public. The project is four months old, and nothing can yet be checked against its goals.

Beyond its two EIC grants, Mitiga is a partner in six Horizon Europe consortia on wildfire resilience (FIRE-RES), urban climate adaptation (CARMINE), Copernicus emergency services (UNICORN), Mediterranean early warning (MEDEWSA), urban runoff (D4RUNOFF) and emergency alert standards (ARTEMis), with a combined net EU contribution of €2,134,444.38, according to the CORDIS records for FIRE-RES, CARMINE, UNICORN, MEDEWSA, D4RUNOFF and ARTEMis.

Why Europe Should Care

Both of Mitiga's EIC projects sit on EU priorities. The EU Adaptation Strategy, adopted in 2021, calls for "smarter adaptation" using better data and tools, which is what climate risk models sell. On 28 November 2023 the Commission estimated that Europe's electricity grids need €584 billion of investment, as consumption is expected to rise by around 60% by 2030, according to its grid action plan announcement. SOLARA targets the physical side of that build-out: which solar plants, substations and lines heat, hail or floods will damage. CORDIS tags the whole SOLARA budget as spending on climate action, the digital agenda and artificial intelligence.

The Verdict

A grant that built a product, and a company that outgrew it

ICE4ATM did most of what it promised: the ash forecasting software reached operational use and found institutional customers, though satellite detection fell short and the volcanic warning service is no longer visible on Mitiga's website. The bigger result was the company. Mitiga took its modelling skills from a narrow aviation niche into climate risk, raised €21.25 million, and won a second EIC award. Its 2023 revenue of €423,000 shows that the commercial case is still being made.
