INERATEC, a 2016 spin-off of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, builds compact reactors that turn carbon dioxide and green hydrogen into a synthetic crude oil, which can be refined into aviation fuel, diesel and waxes. In the European Commission's list of winners of the 7 October 2020 EIC Accelerator pilot cut-off, INERATEC GmbH of Karlsruhe appears with IMPOWER2X, "INERATEC Modular Plants for Renewable Chemical Products", as a grant-only award; no other company is listed for the project. According to CORDIS, the EU contributed €2,444,457.75 to a total cost of €3,492,082.50, from 1 May 2021 to 30 June 2023. The project was meant to take INERATEC from demonstration units to industrial plants and to set up serial production of its reactors.
Five years after the award, the company's largest asset is ERA ONE, a plant at the Frankfurt-Höchst industrial park that can make up to 2,500 tonnes of e-fuels a year. It was inaugurated on 3 June 2025, according to Renewable Carbon News and Chemical Online, both carrying the company's announcement. The EIC project's final report had promised it for the third quarter of 2023.

Where INERATEC Stands Now
INERATEC is operating. North Data, which mirrors the German commercial register, lists no insolvency, shows share capital rising from €25,000 at registration in 2016 to €73,162 in February 2024, and records annual accounts filed for every year from 2018 to 2024. The company's entry in the Bundestag lobby register names four managing directors and lists economic activity and public grants as its main sources of money.
Its news in 2026 is a stream of partnerships and first deliveries. On 8 June 2026 KLM Cityhopper flew passengers from Amsterdam to Hamburg on a blend containing 5% synthetic kerosene made at ERA ONE, according to INERATEC and fuel supplier MB Energy; the partners said that "only a fraction of the volumes required to meet European 2030 targets is actually in production". ERA ONE has received ISCC EU certification, which lets its fuels count as renewable fuels of non-biological origin under EU law, the company says. On 6 October 2026 it reported shipping several tonnes of synthetic wax to an unnamed US maker of alternative edible fats, its first commercial batch for food, according to INERATEC and CHEManager. No volume of fuel actually produced at ERA ONE has been published.
"This milestone shows that regulation, certification, and industrial production are finally starting to come together."
Tim Böltken, CEO and co-founder, on the ISCC EU certification of ERA ONE, INERATEC news releaseThe Technology: Small Reactors, Numbered Up
Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, which turns a mix of carbon monoxide and hydrogen into liquid hydrocarbons, is a century-old process run by oil majors in giant plants. INERATEC first converts CO2 to carbon monoxide in a reverse water-gas shift reactor, then runs the Fischer-Tropsch step in micro-structured reactors that fit into containers. The CORDIS objective describes the idea as "numbering-up": adding more reactors and modules instead of building one larger vessel. Idemitsu Kosan, the Japanese refiner that invested in 2025, explained the difference in its own release: in conventional large Fischer-Tropsch plants the temperature inside the reactor becomes uneven and efficiency drops, while INERATEC's small reactors with fine temperature control avoid this, and the modules do not need large sites.
At ERA ONE the CO2 comes from a biogas plant that processes waste and the hydrogen is a by-product of chlorine production in the same industrial park, according to the European Investment Bank and Renewable Carbon News. The price gap to fossil fuel is the central weakness: the EIC project's own periodic report says electricity accounts for roughly 40% to 52% of production costs, and that CO2 captured from air makes up 25% of costs against 6% to 8% when taken from concentrated sources such as biogas plants.
What the EIC Project Promised, and What the Record Shows
The proposal summary on CORDIS says INERATEC had built 10 demonstration plants and reached technology readiness level 7, and that IMPOWER2X would make level 9 "reachable". It promised to modularise and standardise plant designs, build up serial production of modules and reactors, and implement plants "at industrial scale and at customers' sites". The final periodic report, covering May 2022 to June 2023, lists what was done: first industrial prototypes of the reverse water-gas shift and Fischer-Tropsch reactors were built and tested; a validated 10 MW plant design became the basis for Frankfurt; a 100 MW "world-scale" design for 35,000 tonnes a year was drawn up; the permit application under the Federal Immission Control Act was filed; and the Frankfurt products were registered under REACH. It also said an ERP system and quality processes were set up to allow ISO 9001 certification, that the serial production "should be officially launched in 2025", and that staff grew from 47 to 130 full-time equivalents, with 200 forecast for 2025.
The plant was built, but late. INERATEC's history page dates the groundbreaking to April 2023 and the delivery of the first module to October 2023; the inauguration followed in June 2025. No announcement of a serial reactor production line, an ISO 9001 certificate or a commercial plant sold to an outside customer since 2023 could be found. The company's 2024 accounts are consistent with that: revenue was €492,602, less than in 2023.

IMPOWER2X was not INERATEC's only EU grant. CORDIS lists it as a partner in the Horizon 2020 projects KEROGREEN, on kerosene from air and water, and GLAMOUR, on fuels from glycerol. The lobby register entry for 2024 shows 15 public grants above €10,000 that year, including between €360,001 and €370,000 from the EU agency EISMEA for IMPOWER2X and between €3,990,001 and €4,000,000 from KfW for a first large-scale power-to-liquid plant in Germany.
The Money
Investors have funded the build-out. INERATEC's Series B round of January 2024, led by San Francisco's Piva Capital, raised €118 million according to High-Tech Gründerfonds and Deutsche Startups, while law firm Goodwin put it at €90 million (US$129 million); the sources do not explain the difference. In March 2025 the European Investment Bank confirmed up to €40 million in venture debt, backed by InvestEU, alongside an up to €30 million grant from Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, for the Frankfurt plant and further research, according to the EIB. Idemitsu Kosan invested an undisclosed amount through its corporate venture arm, according to INERATEC (30 October 2025) and Idemitsu (7 November 2025).
The filed accounts of INERATEC GmbH, published with the lobby register, show what that money bought. In the 2023 accounts, equity rose from €10.25 million to €59.08 million and cash from €7.14 million to €49.52 million, and the company employed 132 people on average. In the 2024 accounts, plant under construction reached €41.06 million, equity €82.42 million and cash €43.01 million. The company lost €8.62 million in 2022, €9.36 million in 2023 and €9.24 million in 2024; accumulated losses reached €28.98 million by the end of 2024. Accounts for 2025, the first year of ERA ONE operation, are not yet public.
Why Europe Should Care
Synthetic fuels are written into EU law. The ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, Regulation (EU) 2023/2405, requires fuel suppliers at EU airports to blend 6% sustainable aviation fuel from 2030, of which synthetic fuels must average 1.2% in 2030 and 2031, rising to 35% synthetic fuel by 2050, as the Commission summarises. ERA ONE's certification lets its output count toward these quotas, but the partners in the June 2026 KLM flight warned that the 2030 e-SAF sub-mandate "will be challenging to achieve without urgent action", according to MB Energy.
INERATEC has also pitched its modules as a supply-security tool. In June 2025 it signed a partnership with Rheinmetall to deploy power-to-liquid plants for defence and critical infrastructure, and in November 2025 Rheinmetall presented a consortium with INERATEC, Sunfire and Greenlyte to build several hundred modular plants of 5,000 to 7,000 tonnes a year each, but only once political and regulatory conditions are in place, according to The Defense Post. In March 2026 INERATEC and the French group TERTU set up the joint venture T.H2 for a plant near Caen that would gasify about 60,000 tonnes of wood residues a year, with commissioning targeted for 2029 and an Innovation Fund application still in preparation, according to INERATEC and Hydrogen Central. None of these plants has a public investment decision.
What the company said
Serial reactor production from 2025, plants at customer sites, and 165,000 tonnes of e-fuels a year by 2030, a 1,500-fold increase.
What the record shows
One 2,500-tonne plant running since 2025, two years late, partnership plans in France and defence, and annual sales under €1 million.
What Cannot Be Checked
Open questions
How much fuel ERA ONE has produced, whether it runs at full capacity, how many people INERATEC employs today and whether the 200 staff forecast for 2025 was reached, and whether the company has started serial reactor production are not public. INERATEC is not in the EIC Fund portfolio; its 2020 award was grant only.
The Verdict
Late, but built
The EIC grant paid for reactor scale-up that ended up in a working, certified e-fuel plant, and the company has since raised far more from private and public investors. The promised industrial business, serial production and plants sold to customers, has yet to show up in public announcements or in the revenue line.
